- Use scales to weigh materials to be put into furnaces
- Make sure materials meet specifications by drawing smelted metal samples from furnaces or kettles to calculate types and amounts of materials needed
- Watch air and temperature gauges or metal color and fluidity, and turn fuel valves or adjust controls to maintain required temperatures
